When it comes to replacing missing teeth, there are more options available to patients than ever. The days of the stereotypical ‘dentures in a glass of water’ are essentially over, and there are treatments available which replace your missing teeth with incredibly realistic alternatives. Some treatments can even be completed in a single day.
Replacing a missing tooth is more than just a cosmetic issue. When teeth are missing for an extended period of time, the surrounding teeth can become misaligned and are more susceptible to gum disease and tooth erosion. It’s at least as big a dental health issue as a cosmetic one, so it’s important to look at the options available.
The options available to you will depend on your current dental health, but there is a treatment available for just about every situation. Some treatments are more expensive than others, but we have various financing options available to patients to help them get the treatment they need.
Dentures
Dentures remain an affordable and effective way of replacing any missing teeth, and denture technology has improved substantially over the last few decades. Some people find them uncomfortable initially, but they become accustomed to them over time.
They are generally the most affordable option, however they are likely to need replaced every few years as they become worn. Caring for dentures is a little different to natural teeth, with denture-specific hygiene products often required to keep them in optimal condition.
Bridges
If there are healthy teeth in the surrounding area, dental bridges can be used to replace missing teeth. They are anchored on the surrounding teeth and will work with your existing teeth to bridge the gap in your smile. The treatment time is fairly short, meaning you can have your old smile back reasonably quickly.
Bridges are a little more expensive than having dentures made, but they are a more natural-feeling and longer lasting treatment.
Some work is normally required to prepare the supporting teeth before having the bridge fitted. The abutment teeth will be prepared to allow the caps at either end of the bridge to be fitted, which usually involves some contouring work. The bridge can then be fitted and secured, providing an effective replacement for your missing teeth.
Dental Implants
If you’re looking for the most realistic way of replacing your missing teeth, dental implants are the solution. An artificial tooth root is attached to the jawbone and a denture is attached, allowing the implant to function in exactly the same way as a natural tooth. Implants are secure, long lasting and can be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth.
Having implants fitted is the more expensive of the three options, but the can last upwards of 20 years if they are properly cared for. We also have various financing options available to help our patients spread the cost of having implants fitted.
Regular check ups and cleaning will be required to keep the implant and the surrounding gum tissue in good health, but outside of those appointments you can care for an implant as if it was a natural tooth. Implants are by far the best way of replacing any teeth you may have lost, and at our practice you can have them fitted in a day!
